FAQ
What is an IP address?
It is the numeric address given to every device that connects to the internet. The sites you visit see you by this address and send their replies to it. At home or at work, all devices usually share one public IP address.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses are four numbers such as 185.201.135.237, and there are only so many of them. IPv6 addresses such as 2a0f:cb00::105 are much longer and practically unlimited. If your connection supports both, this page shows both.
What do provider and AS number mean?
The internet is made of networks called autonomous systems (AS). The AS number shows which network your IP address belongs to, in other words which provider gives you your connection. This comes from public registry data.
Why does my IP address change?
Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic address; it can change when the router restarts or the mobile network changes. A static IP address is something you get separately from your provider.
Does this page store my address?
No. Your address is used only to show it to you on this page. As on every web server, access logs are kept for security; see the privacy policy for details.
